Marrakech: Traditional Moroccan Pottery with a Local Artisan

At the foot of the High Atlas, surrounded by olive trees and the earthen villages of the countryside, we spend time discovering one of Morocco’s enduring crafts. Guided by a local artisan, the experience unfolds slowly through clay, handwork and traditional techniques — creating a piece of our own while learning the gestures behind Moroccan pottery.

The Experience

Working with Clay

We begin with the clay itself, learning how to handle and shape the material under the guidance of a local artisan. There is no previous experience needed; the workshop is designed to introduce us gently to the craft and allow time to become familiar with working by hand.

Shaping Our Own Piece

As the clay begins to take form, we discover the traditional gestures and techniques used in Moroccan pottery. Rather than simply watching, we take part in the process ourselves, slowly shaping a personal piece from beginning to end.

The Art of Decoration

Once the form is complete, attention turns to decoration. This final stage gives us the opportunity to add our own character to the piece while learning more about the visual language and craftsmanship associated with traditional Moroccan pottery.

Beyond the Experience

The workshop is arranged from a traditional guest house in the village of Tizfrit, near Amizmiz, where earthen architecture, olive groves and the High Atlas shape the surrounding landscape. The pottery experience forms part of a collection of locally rooted activities offered to guests staying here, with an emphasis on meeting people from the region and discovering the Atlas through its landscapes and traditions.
