Douro Valley: A Mountain Horseback Ride with Wine & Lunch

We leave the river behind for the quieter mountains of the Douro, where open trails wind through a landscape of terraced vineyards and far-reaching views. The day brings together two hours on horseback, a traditional lunch in a tiny mountain village and a wine tasting—a slow immersion in the countryside and flavours of northern Portugal.

The Experience

On Horseback Through the Mountains

We begin with a peaceful two-hour ride along scenic mountain trails, with a short pause along the way to stretch our legs and take in the landscape. The horses are described as calm, with guidance provided before and during the ride, making the experience approachable even for those without previous riding experience.

Lunch in a Mountain Village

After our time in the saddle, we settle in for a traditional lunch surrounded by nature. The meal is served in a small mountain village of around 190 residents, offering a glimpse into a quieter, more rural side of the Douro beyond its celebrated vineyards.

An Afternoon of Douro Wine

The experience continues with a guided wine tasting. The current detailed programme includes four Douro table wines and two Port wines, accompanied by an introduction to the region’s winemaking traditions. It is a relaxed ending to a day shaped by mountains, horses and local flavours.
