Bali: A Sunrise Horseback Ride Through the Mountains

Before Bali fully wakes, we set out on horseback beneath the night sky, leaving a traditional village behind as the trail begins its gradual journey towards the mountains. With temple prayers carrying through the darkness and the landscape slowly appearing with the first light, the ride leads towards a mountaintop sunrise overlooking rice terraces, coastline and Mount Agung.

The Experience

Riding Before Dawn

We begin in the village of Bugbug while the surroundings are still dark and quiet. From here, the horses carry us towards nearby Mount Bukidasa, accompanied by the sounds of nature and, as described by the provider, the mantras of prayers from the village temples. It is an atmospheric beginning that reveals a very different side of Bali from its busier daytime rhythm.

Through the Mountain Landscape

As we climb higher, the darkness gradually gives way to views across rice terraces and winding rivers. Mount Agung rises within the wider landscape, while on clear horizons the islands of Lombok and Nusa Penida can be seen in the distance. The journey is guided by an experienced team, allowing the landscape and the rhythm of the horses to remain at the heart of the experience.

Sunrise from the Mountaintop

The defining moment arrives at the summit, where we pause as the first morning light spreads across the coastline below. From this elevated viewpoint, Bali's mountains, terraces and sea slowly emerge in softer colours—a peaceful culmination to a ride that begins in darkness and ends with the island waking around us.

Beyond the Experience

The stable sits in near Bali's volcanic-sand beaches. Other riding experiences can be arranged separately, including black-sand beach rides, jungle and hidden-trail rides, and a longer sunset journey through jungle, rivers and rice fields before returning along the beach.
