Penedès: A Vineyard Retreat beneath the Mountains of Montserrat
We stay among the vineyards of Penedès, where an old Catalan country estate rests quietly beneath the unmistakable silhouette of Montserrat. Surrounded by vines, woodland, and open countryside, the setting feels wonderfully removed despite being within easy reach of Barcelona. Life here follows the landscape — mornings overlooking the vineyards, afternoons wandering between the vines, and evenings that naturally gather around wine, food, and the fading light over the mountains.
Life Among the Vines
The vineyards give the estate its rhythm. We can wander through rows of vines, discover the winemaking traditions of the region, and spend time tasting wines produced from the land around us. There is something particularly grounding about experiencing wine this way — not simply at the table, but within the landscape where it begins.
Around the estate, gardens, terraces, and quiet corners invite us to stay outside a little longer. The old country house carries the character of its rural surroundings, creating a stay that feels closely connected to the land rather than separate from it.
The Landscape of Penedès
Beyond the estate, we find ourselves in one of Catalonia's great wine landscapes. Country roads lead between vineyards, small towns, and traditional villages, while Montserrat rises dramatically in the distance.
We can spend our days discovering local wineries, wandering through nearby villages, stopping for long lunches, or simply driving through the countryside without much of a destination. Barcelona remains close enough for the journey to feel effortless, yet the pace here belongs entirely to rural Catalonia.
Wine, Food & Slower Days
Much of the pleasure of staying here comes from allowing the day to unfold around the table. Wine and food are naturally woven into the experience, giving us an opportunity to discover the flavours of the region without rushing from one place to another.
Between meals and glasses of wine, we can retreat into quieter moments of well-being, linger in the gardens, or find somewhere overlooking the vineyards as the afternoon begins to soften. There is no need to fill every hour — the landscape itself gives us enough reason to stay still.
We come for the vineyards beneath Montserrat, and linger for the quiet pleasure of experiencing Catalonia one glass, one meal, and one slow afternoon at a time.
