Istria: A Truffle Hunt with Traditional Tasting

Deep in the Mirna River valley, we step beneath the trees of the Motovun Forest in search of one of Istria’s most treasured ingredients. Accompanied by experienced local hunters and specially trained dogs, this is an intimate introduction to a tradition shaped by the forest, the seasons and generations of local knowledge.

The Experience

Into the Motovun Forest

We begin on foot, following the dogs into the forest as they search for truffles hidden beneath the earth. Along the way, we learn about the natural habitat of both white and black truffles, how they develop underground and the careful techniques used to uncover them without damaging the surrounding roots and landscape.

Hunting Alongside the Dogs

The guided hunt itself lasts around forty-five minutes. Rather than simply watching, we experience the search alongside licensed truffle hunters and their trained dogs, discovering how generations of local knowledge continue to shape this distinctive Istrian craft.

A Taste of Istria

After leaving the forest, the experience continues with local truffle flavours. Depending on the selected experience, tastings can include freshly prepared truffle dishes and delicacies alongside local cheese, olive oil and Istrian wine—a fitting conclusion to a morning spent discovering where these ingredients begin.
