Cape Town: A Morning of Dahlias on a Constantia Farm

We spend a quiet morning on a flower farm in Constantia, around a 20–30 minute drive from central Cape Town, surrounded by the plants and seasonal rhythms of the garden. With tea or coffee to begin, we settle into an intimate workshop devoted entirely to dahlias — learning how these extraordinary flowers are grown, cared for and carried from one season into the next.

Among the Dahlias

We begin by discovering the life of the flower beyond the bloom itself. We learn how to select and divide dahlia tubers, take cuttings, grow from seed and care for the plants as the seasons change — a gentle introduction to the knowledge behind a flourishing flower garden.

Growing Something of Our Own

After watching the techniques demonstrated, we get our hands into the process ourselves. We divide tubers and practice taking and propagating cuttings with guidance along the way. No gardening or floral experience is needed; everything required for the morning is provided.

A Little of the Garden to Take Home

Before leaving, we take home what we've begun: a small planted cutting, materials for nurturing it and a mystery dahlia tuber of our own. It gives the morning a lovely sense of continuation — something discovered on a Constantia flower farm that can eventually bloom somewhere else.

We come for a morning among the dahlias, and linger for the simple pleasure of learning how something beautiful is grown.
