Cape Town: A Fynbos Perfume-Making Afternoon

We spend an afternoon in Stellenbosch discovering the Cape through scent. Working with a carefully curated collection of natural fragrance ingredients, we explore indigenous and fynbos oils alongside classic perfume notes, slowly learning how individual aromas can be layered into something entirely our own. The experience unfolds over three hours in an intimate studio setting, with everything we need provided.

The Scents of the Cape

We begin with a palette of 25 natural fragrance ingredients, smelling each one individually and discovering how familiar perfume notes can sit alongside rarer indigenous oils. Rather than simply choosing a finished fragrance, we take our time exploring the ingredients and finding the scents that naturally draw us in.

Blending Our Own Perfume

With guidance along the way, we begin combining and balancing our chosen notes, gradually shaping them into a fragrance that feels personal to us. It is a quiet, sensory process — smelling, adjusting and returning to different combinations until our perfume begins to take its final form.

A Fragrance to Take Home

At the end of the afternoon, we leave with our own 30ml perfume, choosing either a traditional alcohol-based spray or an oil-based roll-on. More than a souvenir, it becomes a scent shaped by our own preferences and a beautiful reminder of an afternoon spent discovering another side of the Cape.

The workshop takes place in Stellenbosch, around a 45–60 minute drive from central Cape Town, bringing us into the quieter landscapes of the Cape Winelands. The studio accommodates up to eight guests, while groups of six or more can arrange a private session on a date of their choice.

We come to discover the scents of the Cape, and linger for the quiet pleasure of creating a fragrance entirely our own.
